Human factors briefing notes - Resource pack

Understanding how human factors (HF) influence human performance is becoming increasingly important as a management aid.  To improve industry's understanding of key HF issues, as identified by HSE, the EI’s Human and Organisational Factors Committee (HOFCOM) commissioned the first edition of the Human factors briefing notes resource pack in 2003. The notes have now been revised, updated and expanded to cover 20 topics.  They provide succinct guidance to managers on pertinent HF issues including the HSE ‘key topics’ (for example alarm handling, fatigue and safety critical procedures) and more specific HF issues, including performance indicators and leadership.

Each briefing note includes:

  • An introduction to each HF topic;
  • Checklists of questions to gauge whether your company has a problem;
  • Guidance on what the company or management can do to address each HF issue;
  • 'Negative' and 'positive' case studies (illustrating both the consequences of an issue and potential solutions);
  • Suggested performance indicators (PIs) for the HSE 'key topics', and
  • Further reading lists.

The briefing notes will be of interest to anyone wanting to gain an overview of HF or of particular HF issues they are facing, and to managers who are looking to apply practical solutions to solve these issues.

The Human factors briefing notes are free to download. Alternatively, they can be purchased in resource pack format (includes the complete collection of briefing notes, contained in their own folder).
