Refinery to terminal − a route to realising value?
The market remains challenging for refiners, although significant regional variations emerge, write Wood Mackenzie’s Gordon McManus, Onur Capan and Ben Holt.

UK oil refining at a crossroads
A range of studies show that oil will remain an important energy source globally and for the UK in the future. The oil refining sector makes a vital contribution to the UK’s economy. However, in common with the refining industry in the rest of Europe, it now faces a combination of factors, the response to which will be critical in shaping its future direction and capability. UKPIA’s Nick Vandervell explains.

Transforming for a new energy era
Radical transformation is required if refineries are to tackle deep seated cultural and structural characteristics that stand in the way of competitive success, write Accenture’s Fay Shong and Kevin Quast.

Six common mistakes
Process automation and control systems improve plant profitability and reduce the risk of a major incident, but there are challenges to their continued, reliable success, writes Jon Stroup, Senior Consultant, Solomon Associates.

Minimising losses
Paul Harrison, Technical Manager of the Energy Institute (EI) Hydrocarbon Management Committee (HMC) outlines the work of the HMC-2 Refinery and Downstream Measurement Committee.

Tough times ahead
Lubomír Sedlák reviews the Czech Republic’s refining sector, which faces three main challenges going forwards and is unlikely to expand at any point soon.

Refining expansion plans in doubt
‘WANTED – experienced, international oil majors to overhaul overlooked and possibly underplayed reserves in the Caspian. Apply to the government of Turkmenistan.’ An announcement to that effect emerged over the summer from the Turkmenistan government, in a move that suggested that the gas-rich country was finally looking to establish the depth of its oil reserves. Mark Rowe reports.

Good for all
Interests of shareholders align with interests of customers in the storage terminal sector.

Spread the word
Massive changes in global liquids flows are generating even greater demand for entrepot storage services in south-east Asia, but so are regional population growth and increasing industrial activity.

On your benchmarks
The EI’s new Process Safety Survey, an online benchmarking service, aims to help terminal operators compare their safety performance against their peers. Stuart King explains how it works

Shore to ship
The best way to avoid cargo contamination claims is to make a plan, carry it out and take a copy of everything.
