Energy Institute publishes low carbon heat briefing

Released on 19/01/2012

This latest briefing from the Energy Institute (EI) covers the topic of low carbon heat. Designed to enhance knowledge and understanding, this briefing looks at how heat fits into the UK energy system, the associated challenges, technology options and incentives available.

Heat is the most prevalent use of energy across the domestic, services and industrial sectors, making up 76% of all the energy in those areas. To meet the UK’s target to cut 80% of greenhouse emissions based on 1990 levels by 2050, very significant cuts in heating-related emissions will be required.

There are various ways in which the carbon intensity of heating can be reduced. This briefing outlines the benefits of the technological options available, which include: heat pumps, combined heat and power, biogas, solar thermal and biomass.

Prof Matt Leach FEI, Director, Centre for Environmental Strategy, University of Surrey, provides member analysis and further context of the role heat plays as part of an ‘electrified’ future.
