It’s quick and easy to join us as an Affiliate. There is no validation of qualification or experience and you can receive all the benefits of membership immediately. Affiliate members come from a very wide range of disciplines and backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common – they want to be part of the only specialist professional body for Energy. There are two other grades of pre-professional membership that may be more appropriate than Affiliate. They are:
If you are an undergraduate, and your university department is a Learning Affiliate member of the EI, we can offer you free student membership which is your first step towards professional membership and additional qualifications. Registration for free student membership is done exclusively via your University department. For other students, membership is very low-cost. Click here to join online.
If you have recently joined an energy company, or are undertaking postgraduate study, join us as a graduate member. You should have an Honours Degree, HND/HNC Advanced, GNVQ, NC/D or an assessed academic equivalent (we can tell you what that is when you apply) and you may have little or no practical experience.
Alternatively, you may have a first degree and are still studying, perhaps for a Masters or PhD. If so you can still join us at GradEI level and at a reduced subscription if you are not working.

For most energy professionals, the ultimate aim of membership will be professional recognition. You can either join today as an Affiliate and we will invite you to upgrade at a time to suit you or you can apply directly as a professional. Our professional members come from a very wide range of energy backgrounds, why not join them?
We can offer you an EI grade of professional membership along with a number of different professional registrations appropriate to your specialism:
- Professional membership (Fellow, Member or Technician Member)
- Engineering registration (CEng, IEng or EngTech)
- Chartered Scientist registration (CSci)
- Chartered Environmentalist registration (CEnv)
- Chartered Energy Engineer or Chartered Petroleum Engineer (unique to EI)
- Chartered Energy Manager (unique to EI)
