How to apply for individual membership

It's easy to join!

We have three grades of pre-professional membership - Affiliate, Graduate, Student, and three grades of professional membership - Fellow, Member and Technician Member. Elsewhere on the site we have provided information on all these grades of membership together with the optional registration opportunities which are available alongside our professional membership grades.

If you are unsure of which grade to apply for, please consult the individual membership grades section. Alternatively, you can complete the online request for guidance form, which will enable us to provide you with the required assistance.

Application process for pre-Professional Membership

Application process for Professional Membership

If you are applying for the grades of Fellow, Member or Technician Member and/or any level of registration with the Engineering Council, Society for the Environment or Science Council, your application process will comprise stages 1 to 6 below.

1.       On receipt of the membership application and appropriate application/transfer fee, the application and supporting material is initially assessed by a member of the Membership Panel and then considered by the Panel at its next meeting. The Membership Panel meets approximately every two months and applications must be received by the Membership Officer at least three weeks before the meeting.

2.       Candidates completing a Professional Development Review will usually be invited to an interview (usually with the local Branch) to discuss their application. Candidates who do not need to complete a Professional Development Review may have their applications accepted immediately.

3.       Interview results are reported to the Membership Panel at its next meeting.

4.       The Membership Panel considers the interview results. The Panel forwards its recommendations to the Council of the Energy Institute, which has two weeks to make the final membership decisions.

5.       Election letters and membership subscription invoices are issued after Council's decision has been made.

6.       On receipt of your annual subscription and additional fees if appropriate, we will send confirmation of your election. If appropriate, details will be forwarded to the Engineering Council or Science Council upon successful application.
