This second edition guidance contains major additions to the first and focuses on improving the inherent safety of designs, including protection of associated piping and relief systems.

Numerous industry incidents prompted a second joint industry project (JIP) to provide additional guidance and perform additional experiments investigating alternative relief devices, especially reseating pressure relief valves (PRVs), for heat exchanger overpressure protection.

These guidelines are intended for process, mechanical and instrumentation engineers to use when designing and reviewing systems incorporating shell and tube heat exchangers (STHEs), or when the process conditions are to be changed that could invalidate assumptions made in the system design.
