The Energy Institute (Southern Scotland Branch) and the IET Scotland South East Young Professionals section are delighted to invite you to a lecture on the “Smart Grid” with a leading expert Dr  Khaled Ahmed, from the University of Strathclyde.

Event description

Much is said about a “smart grid” being the future path for electrical power networks, allowing renewable generation – some of it local and small scale - to meet an increasing share of our electrical needs, at a lower cost than the “business as usual” approach to upgrading our networks.

This talk will cover what a “smart grid” is, and how it is different from the electrical networks we have at present.

Dr Ahmed will describe the key technologies which make up a smart grid, including: the need for communications and IT; what a future “smart home” might be; Vehicle-to-Grid charging; local electrical generation and storage; and how these would all interact with the wider grid.

He will illustrate this presentation with some MATLAB / SIMULINK simulations, and will discuss the current state of play with smart grids, and some of the options and challenges in rolling these out.

Speaker biography

Dr Khaled Ahmed is a Senior Lecturer in power electronics at the University of Strathclyde, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He has over 15 years of research experience in power electronics, renewable energy integration, solar energy systems, offshore wind energy, smart grids, and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) networks, much of which was in collaboration with industry.

Dr Ahmed has published over 83 technical papers in refereed journals and conferences, one book, one book chapter, and a pending patent. A Chartered Engineer, he is an IET member, and a senior member of the IEEE.
