Summary

Static electricity can cause fires and explosions where flammable atmospheres such as solvent vapours or dust clouds can occur.

It is a requirement of DSEAR where a dangerous substance is or is liable to be present at the workplace, the employer shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to his employees which arise from that substance. The risk assessment shall include consideration of the likelihood that ignition sources, including electrostatic discharges, will be present and become active and effective;

In other environments, static electricity build-up on personnel can cause nuisance shocks. This lecture will explain the phenomenon of static electricity and will include practical demonstrations.
