At the Energy Institute (EI)'s Annual General Meeting, Joan MacNaughton CB HonFEI, Senior Vice President - Power and Environment Policies, Alstom Power, was appointed the new President for 2011-2013.

Joan MacNaughton has been an influential figure in the energy and climate policy debate in a variety of UK, EU and international roles. As Director General of Energy at the former Department of Trade and Industry, she delivered several major changes and made a significant contribution to international energy policy, including overseeing the energy agenda during the UK Presidency of the EU and leading the work on the energy part of the climate change proposals agreed at the G8 Gleneagles Summit. Since 2007, Joan has been with Alstom Power and spearheads the company’s clean power advocacy – to advance clean, sustainable energy and reduce power generation CO2 emissions.

In response to her appointment, Joan MacNaughton says, 'I am honoured to be taking up post as President of the Energy Institute. There can scarcely have been a time when the contribution the EI makes has been more important – whether in driving up the professional skills needed in the energy sector or helping to ensure a better informed debate about the energy challenges we face. I'm looking forward to contributing to the Institute's important work.'

Louise Kingham OBE FEI, Chief Executive, Energy Institute, adds, ‘Joan is a great ambassador for the Energy Institute and I am sure she will make an invaluable contribution as President in driving forward our plans as we continue to work to promote professionalism and good practice across the industry.’

Joan has a degree in physics from the University of Warwick. From 2004-2005, she chaired the Governing Board of the International Energy Agency (IEA). She is a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, a board member of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), and the International Advisory Board of the Energy Institute of University College London. She is also a member of the Policy, Regulatory and Legal Steering Group of Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute (GCCSI), and of the Board of Governors, Argonne Laboratory at the University of Chicago where she chairs the Budget Committee.  In 2006, she became a Companion of the Order of the Bath.
