The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (IGC) is an internationally reconised qualification that will provide you with a broad understanding of key health and safety issues.

The NEBOSH IGC is also suitable for those embarking on a career in health and safety, offering a solid platforn on which to progress to either of the NEBOSH Diploma courses. No prior health and safety knowledge is required.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify workplace hazards and offer advice on corrective and preventative measurements. 
  • Understand the role and objectives of the International Labour Organisation 
  • Plan and implement an effective health & safety policy
  • Influence behavior to create a positive health & safety culture throughout an organisation
  • Undertake risk assessments and accident investigations and recommend suitable action
  • Undertake a health & safety audit

Pre-course Requirements:

The NEBOSH Certificate is aimed at those working in health and safety and want to develop a career in safety management. It is suitable for managers, supervisors and operational staff from all functions not just health and safety, from organisations in all sectors.

The following topics are covered by the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety:

The NEBOSH Certificate is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately: 

IGC1 Management of international health and safety 

  • Element 1: Foundations in Health and Safety
  • Element 2: Health and Safety Management Systems – Plan
  • Element 3: Health and Safety Management Systems – Do
  • Element 4: Health and Safety Management Systems – Check
  • Element 5: Health and Safety Management Systems - Act

GC2 Controlling workplace hazards 

  • Element 1: Workplace Hazards and Risk Control
  • Element 2: Transport Hazards and Risk Control
  • Element 3: Musculoskeletal Hazards and Risk Control
  • Element 4: Work Equipment Hazards and Risk Control
  • Element 5: Electrical Safety
  • Element 6: Fire Safety
  • Element 7: Chemical and Biological Health Hazards and Risk Control
  • Element 8: Physical and Psychological Health Hazards and Risk Control

GC3 Health and safety practical application 

The aim of this unit to assess your knowledge and understanding gained from Units IGC1 and GC2 in a practical environment by successfully completing two activities:

  • A safety inspection of a workplace, identifying common hazards and suggesting appropriate and cost effective control measures
  • A written report detailing your findings from the inspection and persuasively urging management to take appropriate action
