The Cadman and Melchett Awards are among the most prestigious awards in the gift of the Energy Institute and are awarded to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the energy industry. Presentation of the Cadman and Melchett Awards is followed by a lecture delivered by the Award recipient.


'In the footsteps of Cadman'

Dr Dame Angela Strank FREng CEng FIChemE, Chief Scientist and Head of Technology Downstream, BP

Dr Angela Strank joined BP in 1982 as a PhD geologist in Exploration and Production and has since occupied various technical and commercial leadership roles including; Manager Stratigraphic Services, Chief Financial Officer Lubricants (Americas), BP/Statoil Alliance Manager Nigeria, Business Development and Reputation Manager Angola and Technology Vice President, Fuels and Lubricants. In 2013 she was appointed to the role of Vice President, Head of Group Chief Executive’s Office, based in London, providing executive support to the CEO, Bob Dudley.

In April 2014 Angela was appointed to the role of BP’s Chief Scientist, with responsibility for developing strategic insights for the company arising from advancements in science and technology. In addition to being Chief Scientist, in 2015 Angela was also appointed Head of Downstream Technology for BP.

In 2010 Angela was the winner of the UK First Women’s Award in Science and Technology, an award sponsored by the CBI to recognise pioneering UK women in business and industry. She is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers, and in 2017 was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers.

In 2017 Angela was awarded a DBE in Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her services to the oil and gas industry and for encouraging women into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

Angela is a Non-Executive Board Director at Severn Trent Water plc, and she is a Board Governor at the University of Manchester.

Cadman Award

The Cadman Memorial Fund commemorates the late Lord Cadman of Silverdale, Chairman of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP) and Past President of the Institute of Petroleum. The first Cadman Award was given on 27 March 1946 and since its initiation, the fund has provided for the endowment of a memorial award and lecture on an aspect of the science of petroleum.

Who receives the Award?

The Cadman Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the gift of the Energy Institute and is presented to an individual for their outstanding and significant service to the oil industry on an international basis.
