Who is it for?

Anyone who is a student, or on an apprenticeship, can join us as a Student member. You don’t necessarily need to be on an energy related course, but most of our student members are thinking about energy as the context in which they want to develop their careers.

What does it cost?

Student membership is free if you are studying at an EI Learning Affiliate institution. If not, there is a one-off fee of £27 for the duration of your studies. View our list of EI Learning Affiliate universities and colleges

Who is it for?

Professionals who are developing their experience in any part of the energy sector, and want to progress. As an Associate Member, you are entitled to use the post nominals AMEI, showing your expertise and commitment to continuing to develop your career in the sector.

What does it cost?

£33 if you are a Student member and upgrade. £66 if you have less than 5 years' experience in industry and £90 if you have 5 years or more. For more information see fees

Who is it for?

Experienced technicians working in any part of energy, and using their know-how of established techniques and processes to solve practical technical problems. You will be confident in selecting appropriate techniques, procedures and methods to undertake energy related tasks, and be comfortable working without supervision and supervising, guiding or allocating work to other staff.

What does it cost?

There is an application fee of £40, and, once you become an TMEI, an annual membership subscription fee (pro rata in the year you join; we’ll also take into account any membership fees you have already paid in your first subscription year). For more information see fees

We are looking for committed energy professionals, so you will need to first join us as an Associate Member (or be an existing Affiliate Member) before you apply to become a TMEI - it means that you’ll get the benefits of membership right away and that we can support you on your journey.

Who is it for?

The EI's Technician Member grade recognises experienced technicians working in any part of energy, and using their know-how of established techniques and processes to solve practical technical problems. This particular route to TMEI is for those who are already registered as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) and have a track record of working in energy. It means that you have a quicker route to joining us.

What does it cost?

We are currently waiving the application fee. Once you become a TMEI, there is an annual membership fee. If you are already a member on another grade of membership, we will set any fees you have already paid for this subscription year against your new membership subscription.

Who is it for?

The EI’s MEI membership grade recognises experienced professionals working in the energy sector. This particular route to MEI is for those who are already Chartered or Incorporated Engineers or Chartered Environmentalists through another UK professional institution, or Engineers Ireland, – it means you have a quicker route to joining us. You will need to be working in an energy-related role, where energy is your prime focus, and have a track record of working in responsible roles specifically in the energy sector.

Who is it for?

Energy’s leaders and influencers – the professionals whose experience and depth of knowledge and expertise means that they play a key role in driving the profession forward.

Fellows can be working in any area of energy. They will have management responsibilities at a strategic level as well as an advanced level of knowledge about - and experience in - the energy industry, so they will be excellent leaders and managers and have advanced interpersonal skills.

What does it cost?

There is an application fee of £100, and, once you become an FEI, an annual membership subscription fee (pro rata in the year you join; we’ll also take into account any membership fees you have already paid in your first subscription year). For more information see fees

Engineers who have a demonstrable track record of applying skills and knowledge at an advanced level in a responsible role in energy. You will need to show that you have appropriate high level technical knowledge in engineering, the know-how to apply it, and understand your responsibilities as a professional. Chartered Engineers often have a qualification at master’s level and above in engineering, but that is just one route to registration - you can also apply if you have other relevant qualifications and/or experience. If your work is about making things work by solving practical engineering problems, EngTech could be for you. There are over half a million people in the UK who could already be eligible for EngTech and get their first professional qualification in engineering. You will need foundation technical knowledge and the know how to apply it, but you don’t necessarily have to have formal qualifications e.g. if you have substantial work experience. If you have track record of using high level scientific knowledge combined with innovation and creativity in your wok in energy, Chartered Scientist could be the right title for you. You will need to show that you have appropriate foundation scientific knowledge, the know-how to apply it, and understand your responsibilities as a professional. CScis often have a Masters degree in a relevant scientific discipline, but you can also apply if you have other relevant qualifications/experience at an equivalent level.
