Already a member? Professional registration gives you internationally recognised status, demonstrating your expertise and commitment to excellence.
Interim Registration (Engineer)
Apply offlineInterim Registration (Engineer)
Planning to work towards CEng, IEng or EngTech in energy? Get your first professional engineering title now!
If you are thinking of applying to become a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or an Engineering Technician at some point in the future, getting your knowledge and understanding recognised is the first step on your journey.
Why apply?
Demonstrating your foundation knowledge, understanding and skills is essential for all Engineering registration applicants. Interim Registration recognises that you have already met the educational requirements set by the Engineering Council for those working in engineering. It helps you to demonstrate to employers and society, that you are committed to building your professional career and gives you your first professional title.
You can apply for EngTech, IEng or CEng Interim Registration to demonstrate that you are part way to full professional registration. If you are already professionally registered you can use it as a stepping stone to help you move from one type of engineering registration to another.
Who is it for?
If you do not have qualifications which are automatically recognised by the Engineering Council, you will need to apply for Interim registration so that we can look at your other qualifications and experience to confirm that you meet the same standards as those with recognised qualifications, or provide you with advice on how to fill in any gaps.
If you have graduated from University but are yet to gain the professional experience required for full registration, Interim registration gives you your first professional title showing that you are already part way towards achieving full registration.
Accredited Qualifications?
If you hold qualifications that are accredited for the registration you wish to apply for, you may be automatically eligible for successful recognition based on your qualifications.
The first step to applying for Interim Registration is to become an AMEI. Once you're an AMEI, you can start your application for Interim Registration by downloading the application pack.

Meet our AMEIs
One of the areas that has greatly benefited me are the knowledge resource section, which have provided valuable information and helped broaden my understanding of the energy sector. Additionally, my journey towards becoming a Chartered Engineer has been supported by the wealth of information and guidance available.
Wan Mohd Hafiz Hj Wan Salim AMEI, Senior HV Equipment Engineer, Ørsted — Subang Jaya, Malaysia
Associate membership has enabled me to a ready and immediate access to the standards and publications of EI, besides interacting with the other EI members engaged in similar activities like mine.
Akhil Nigam AMEI, Lead Technical Safety Engineer, TotalEnergies EP Denmark — Esbjerg, Denmark
I first joined EI through the young professional network, and then continued through my employer’s company membership, where I have grown my network in the industry. The ability to have access to training resources and connect with likeminded professionals has been a key part of my membership.
Tim Sinclair AMEI, Offshore Wind Business Developer, TotalEnergies — Aberdeen, Scotland
Wan Mohd Hafiz Hj Wan Salim AMEI, Senior HV Equipment Engineer, Ørsted — Subang Jaya, Malaysia
How I first became interested in energy
My journey in the energy and electrical field began at the age of 10. I developed a fascination and love for the subject while working on a school project involving basic home switches with lights and a small fan. This early interest led me to pursue engineering in both high school and university. I was deeply inspired and motivated by the impact that energy can have on our daily lives. This motivation guided me to my first position at Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's utility company responsible for operating the main grid in Peninsular Malaysia.
How I’m working toward net zero
Currently, I hold two roles: HV Equipment Manager and Senior HV Equipment Engineer. In these capacities, I support the HV equipment scope for the Revolution 01 Offshore Windfarm project, specifically focusing on the Offshore Substation. This project is among the first of its scale in North America and, upon completion, will provide enough clean energy to power 350,000 homes across Rhode Island and Connecticut.
The reason I joined the EI and the benefits of being an AMEI
After learning about the EI and complimentary Associate membership through my employer’s company membership (EI Membership for Employees Scheme) from my colleague, I decided to join to pursue Chartered Engineer status. I have been a member of the Energy Institute (EI) for almost a year now. One of the areas that has greatly benefited me is the knowledge resources, which have provided valuable information and helped broaden my understanding of the energy sector. Additionally, my journey towards becoming a Chartered Engineer has been supported by the wealth of information and guidance available, even though I have not officially started the process. I am confident that reaching out to the membership team will make the process much smoother.
Akhil Nigam AMEI, Lead Technical Safety Engineer, TotalEnergies EP Denmark — Esbjerg, Denmark
How did you first become interested in energy?
I grew up in New Delhi during the 1970s and 1980s when frequent power outage was an accepted norm, and a kerosene lamp was always kept ready on the study table as a standby. As a young 12-year-old, I was always intrigued by this shortage and raised questions to every adult I met. Scouring through the newspapers and watching the available news channels over time, I realised the role and importance of different renewable and non-renewable sources of energy, power plants, supply and distribution.
You became an AMEI through the EI's Membership for Employees Scheme, what motivated you to join?
Coming from the safety engineering discipline, I have always been referring to the EI's standards on hazardous area classification for over 20 years, even before the organisation changed its name from IP to EI. Thus, I have been familiar with your institution for a very long time, and hence I could not miss an opportunity to be a formal member of your esteemed organisation through the scheme granting me complimentary Associate membership through my company's membership.
How are you working toward net zero?
At TotalEnergies, we are continuously progressing towards our 2030 goal for minimising carbon emissions and environmental pollution while recognising our responsibility towards our neighbours. This drive includes the implementation of several innovative projects aimed at carbon footprint reduction, electrification, catalytic reduction of our emissions, diversifying into myriad renewable sources of energy, including wind, hydrogen, biogas, sustainable aviation fuel, etc.
How is being an AMEI benefiting you?
Associate membership has enabled me to have immediate access to the standards and publications of EI, while interacting with the other EI members engaged in similar activities like mine.
Tim Sinclair AMEI, Offshore Wind Business Developer, TotalEnergies — Aberdeen, Scotland
What inspired your interest in energy?
I became interested in Energy when I came to live in Europe’s’ energy capital – Aberdeen - for university. My studies across energy markets, geo-politics and economics led me to explore a specific dissertation thesis which focused on understanding the problems to renewable energy generation, infrastructure, and transmission in the Orkney Islands. My fascination of how we use and interact with the natural energy around us only grew, especially as I saw first hand the significance of Aberdeen’s oil & gas sector, alongside the socio-political push to green energy sources.
Why did you become an AMEI?
I first joined EI through the Young Professional Network, and then continued through my employer’s company membership, where I have grown my network in the industry. The ability to have access to training resources and connect with likeminded professionals has been a key part of my membership.
Tell us about your current job and how your work is contributing toward a just transition to net zero?
My current job involves supporting the project management of some of the UK’s largest offshore wind projects, for one of the world’s largest energy suppliers! I support the asset management activities of our offshore wind development portfolio in the UK and lead the asset management for our Floating wind projects in the Celtic Sea. I support the project teams through the project development phases such as with consent applications, grid connections and CfD bidding. A particular interest in my job is through business development within the market intelligence and government lobbying workstreams. With this, I lead our understanding of the market and competitors, whilst engaging in the lobbying of organisations and governments for policy changes to support the requirements of TotalEnergies’ projects.

EI membership runs from 1 January - 31 December each year. The due date is 1 January of the year for which you are reviewing, unless you pay by Direct debit, in which case your payment will be taken in February.
We offer half rate concessions on annual membership subscriptions for those who are in receipt of an income of less than £15,000 per year before tax, and local rates for pre professional members in Malaysia, Singapore and Nigeria. To request a concession for a particular subscription year, you will need to send us a formal declaration confirming that you meet the eligibility criteria before 1 January.
We also offer concessionary rates for those who are fully retired from energy. There is no need to reconfirm this every year - a one off declaration in the year you retire is sufficient.
If you would like to apply for a concession, please download and complete the application form and send it to membership@energyinst.org. Please note that concessions are discretionary and assessed by the EI on a case-by-case basis. Concessionary rates cannot be applied retrospectively.
Signing up for Direct Debit is the easiest way to ensure your membership fee is paid in time each year and your access to your member benefits is uninterrupted. To register, please complete and submit our direct debit form.
Alternatively, you can renew your membership by logging into your MyEI profile, clicking on ‘Renew membership’ and entering your card details. When you have paid, you will be able to download a receipt. Please also make sure to review your contact details and mailing preferences to ensure all your details are up-to-date.
If you are a UK taxpayer, then please Gift Aid your subscription by downloading this declaration form and sending it to us. You will be enabling the EI as a registered charity to make the most of your payment by claiming an additional tax back from HMRC. To find out more please read the FAQs.
You are welcome to apply for a higher grade of membership or add an additional professional registration at any time throughout the year. Applications from existing members and new members are treated the same, except for the special instances listed on each grade’s web page. To upgrade, visit the web page of the grade you wish to transfer to and follow the application instructions.
