The AHI Community, originally founded in 1972, is led by a team of dedicated volunteers, working on behalf of the Energy Institute, serving members (Corporate/Technical Partners/Individuals) in Aberdeen and across the Highlands and Islands. Our mission is to connect energy professionals, foster meaningful relationships and collaborate through knowledge-sharing and interactive discussions, empowering members to influence the future of the energy sector.
Our events enable attendees to connect, collaborate and influence:

Scottish government resets offshore wind ambition to 40 GW
4/2/2026
In January 2026, the Scottish government announced a reset of its offshore wind ambition, committing to up to 40 GW of new capacity by 2040. This revised target, confirmed by Gillian Martin MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Climate Action and Energy, represents a substantial increase from the previous goal of 8–11 GW by 2030.

House of Commons report calls for urgent action to save North Sea oil and gas jobs and ramp up clean energy options

A new ‘interim’ report by the House of Commons Scottish Affairs Committee warns that the UK oil and gas sector is at a ‘critical junction’ since the North Sea basin is now geologically mature and the clean energy transition is ramping up.

Aberdeen oil and gas industry hits out at taxation at Offshore Europe

At last week’s oil and gas exhibition SPE Offshore Europe, in Aberdeen, UK offshore energy trade association OEUK blamed the UK government’s tax regime and the Energy Profits Levy (EPL) for accelerating the decline of offshore energy production, by deterring capital investment.

2025 AGM - September 2025
DogTap BrewDog, Balmacassie Commercial Centre
Held in collaboration with BrewDog, this AGM was slightly different as we unveiled our new committee structure (the first significant change since 2019) which saw the appointment of a new Chair and three new Vice Chairs to drive the AHI Branch’s refreshed event programme for 2026. In the spirit of offering unique experiences to members, the AGM also involved a tour of BrewDog’s £12m Anaerobic Digestion facility (which opened in 2022), converting waste into green gas, powering the brewery and reducing emissions, as well as insights to BrewDogs ESG strategy.

While the EI's Technical + Innovation (T+I) programme is aimed at both members of the Energy Institute (Individual, Corporate Member or Technical Parter), you do not need to be an EI member to join the AHI Community's Q&A panel events. However, please note that our 'Energy Unplugged' dinner series is only open to individuals from the EI's Corporate Members and Technical Partners.
We run a mixture of Q&A panel sessions, where we invite an experienced panel of speakers to explore a key industry topic. New for 2026 is our Energy Unplugged dinner series, a private invite-only dinner, aimed to make government officials and C-Suite individuals accessible, in an evening of honest and open conversation about key challenges and explore potential solutions. We also offer a range of in-person social events, aimed to help foster new and strengthen existing connections.
Our events are aimed to enable you to connect with industry peers, gain fresh insights, grow professionally, and help shape the future of the energy sector within a supportive community.

Fervo Energy’s record-breaking Sugarloaf well in Utah showcases the rapid progress of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), while a new report finds the US Great Basin alone could supply 10% of the country’s electricity. Globally, the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects geothermal could meet 15% of future power demand if costs fall. Meanwhile, Germany and the UK are advancing supportive policies and identifying high-potential regions, signalling a global shift towards making geothermal a scalable, low-carbon energy source.

Michael Gallagher, Head of Midlands Net Zero Hub, talks about the exciting range of activity that is driving net zero in the Midlands and the challenges and opportunities being presented as the region transitions to net zero. In the last four years, more than £180mn of funding has been channelled into the Midlands region through the Midlands Net Zero Hub to develop and deliver a range of net zero projects and programmes.
...The talk encompasses the huge potential of the low carbon and environmental goods and service sector, outlining the need and actions taken to upskill the workforce to ensure the delivery of domestic and commercial retrofit. Examples are drawn from the wider work of the Hub including a community led hydro-power project at a UNESCO world heritage site; and a look at the potential for growing food from waste heat and low-carbon transport hubs.

China outlines plans to accelerate offshore wind and green trade measures to reach climate goals

China has unveiled a package of energy and trade initiatives aimed at accelerating its transition to a low-carbon economy as it strives to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The measures include major offshore wind expansion, large-scale renewable energy projects in desert regions, and new frameworks to address international green trade barriers.

8th International Conference: Roadmap to net zero 2025 - February 2025

On 27 - 28 February 2025, the '8th International Conference: Roadmap to net zero 2025', organised by the EI's Hong Kong Community in collaboration with the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong, was successfully held at the university.
...The conference explored key topics, including net zero carbon power generation, green transportation, waste-to-energy technologies, and advanced disruptive technologies for achieving carbon neutrality in Hong Kong by 2050. These themes align closely with the Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050, which envisions 'zero-carbon emissions‧liveable city‧sustainable development' and outlines strategies for combating climate change.
The event featured prominent local and international speakers, providing a platform for experts, researchers, and industry professionals to exchange insights on cutting-edge technologies driving the transition to a carbon-neutral future. By addressing these critical areas, the conference aimed to foster collaboration and accelerate the implementation of sustainable energy solutions in Hong Kong and beyond.

Sustainability and renewable energy forum (SAREF) 4.0 — September 2025
Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), Sarawak, Malaysia
EI Malaysia participated in SAREF 4.0 under the circular energy pavilion by Sarawak Energy, promoting Energy Institute membership and sharing the vision for launching the Energy Institute Sarawak Community.
...The participation showcased our commitment to expanding the energy transition conversation across Malaysia's regions. Peter Godfrey, Managing Director of EI Asia-Pacific, also participated as one of the speakers at the 'Circular economy in energy sector' forum during the event.
Energy Asia – June 2025
Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia
EI Malaysia actively participated in Energy Asia 2025, hosting a booth within the exhibition hall and engaging with attendees from across the energy sector. Over the three-day event, the team successfully attracted significant interest, resulting in a strong number of new member sign-ups, particularly from PETRONAS, further growing its network.
...The Energy Institute also took part in the future energy leaders programme, promoting the organisation’s work and encouraging participation from youth leaders and the next generation of energy professionals.
Alongside the exhibition, EI Malaysia hosted the Energy Institute mixer, which brought together more than 50 attendees from academia, government and industry, including senior leaders from across the sector. The event provided an excellent platform for discussion and networking, with many non-members expressing strong interest in the Energy Institute’s growing presence and activities in Malaysia.
Conversations throughout the event explored a wide range of topics, including energy transition, decarbonisation, nuclear energy, professional accreditation, technology and innovation. A key highlight of the event was the announcement of the Energy Institute Sarawak community, marking an important milestone in supporting regional ambitions for sustainability and the energy transition.
EI MoU signing with Petronas and INSTEP — June 2025

EI Malaysia signed a formal memorandum of understanding (MoU) with INSTEP and Petronas, marking an important step towards strengthening Malaysia’s energy workforce through continuous learning and professional upskilling.
...The strategic partnership reflects a shared commitment to supporting a just and inclusive energy transition across Southeast Asia, while reinforcing collaboration between academia, industry and professional development organisations.
The agreement highlights EI Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to develop future-ready talent, enhance industry capability and promote lifelong learning within the evolving energy sector.

The Energy Institute (EI) Middle East, headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is a dynamic regional arm of the EI's global network. It drives the energy transition in the Middle East by focusing on net zero strategies, excellence in health, safety and the environment (HSE), renewable technologies and professional development. Key initiatives include fostering cross-border collaborations with governments, businesses and communities in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar; launching programmes like the Young Professionals Network (YPN) and Executive Leadership in Energy; and hosting events that address decarbonisation paradoxes, skills gaps and sustainable growth. Recent achievements include mentoring 30+ young professionals via Generation 2050, and strategic partnerships with entities like ADNOC, SNOC and the British Chamber of Commerce Abu Dhabi.
The community supports the EI's mission to power the region's sustainable future, emphasizing innovation in solar, hydrogen and LNG while balancing fossil fuel dominance (98% of regional demand in 2024).

Three months after leaving the OPEC oil and gas cartel, one of the UAE's national oil companies ADNOC has set up a global marketing organisation for LNG; it has also announced its first deals. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a new LNG liquefaction terminal on the Pacific coast of Mexico ships its first cargo to Asia, and Shell makes some big predictions for the future of LNG.

This world premier energy event drew 180,000+ attendees from 160+ countries, focusing on transformation. EI Middle East strengthened its presence through speaking panels for Energy Institute CEO Dr Nick Wayth; Chair, EI Middle East, Dr Waddah Ghanem; and EI Business Director Middle East, Hanan Mohsen, plus meetings with ADNOC, SNOC, UNOC and Bapco leaders to build collaborative frameworks. Hanan Mohsen spoke in the 'Voices of tomorrow' session.
International Energy Week - February 2025

Hosted in London, UK, this global forum featured a Middle East and North Africa (MENA) panel on transition strategies, Gulf-China ties and renewables. Dr Waddah Ghanem, Chair EI Middle East, received the Award of Council for Meritorious Service from the Energy Institute and UAE-UK recognition from Ambassador HE Mansoor Abulhoul for advancing bilateral energy cooperation. Kate Dourian, EI Middle East Honorary Treasurer, moderated the MENA session.
The Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy™ 2025 – Middle East Launch - September 2025
Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Centre, Abu Dhabi, UAE
The inaugural regional launch, in partnership with the British Chamber of Commerce, united regulators and 70 leaders from ADNOC, Mubadala, Masdar. It analysed 2024's 592 exajoules global demand peak, the Middle East's 98% fossil fuel reliance and 7.1% renewable growth (solar-led), fostering dialogue on security and transition.
SPE international health, safety, environment and sustainability (IHSES) conference and exhibition – September 2024
Abu Dhabi Energy Center, Abu Dhabi, UAE
Held 10–12 September 2024 in Abu Dhabi, this 16th edition advanced HSE best practices in oil and gas through innovative solutions and knowledge sharing. EI Middle East leaders, including Dr Waddah Ghanem, Chair EI Middle East and Mark Scanlon, Head of HSE Good Practice, Energy Institute, moderated sessions and showcased decarbonisation portfolios to stakeholders, emphasising sustainability in a high-fossil-fuel region.

DogTap BrewDog, Balmacassie Commercial Centre
Held in collaboration with BrewDog, this AGM was slightly different as we unveiled our new committee structure (the first significant change since 2019) which saw the appointment of a new Chair and three new Vice Chairs to drive the AHI Branch’s refreshed event programme for 2026. In the spirit of offering unique experiences to members, the AGM also involved a tour of BrewDog’s £12m Anaerobic Digestion facility (which opened in 2022), converting waste into green gas, powering the brewery and reducing emissions, as well as insights to BrewDogs ESG strategy.

Headquartered in Nigeria, the Energy Institute (EI) Africa serves as the regional hub for the Energy Institute across the continent, connecting professionals to the EI’s global network. Created in 2010, EI Nigeria has established itself as a reliable platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange within Nigeria’s energy sector. Its activities span across oil and gas, power, renewables, technology and climate-focused solutions. The community plays a unique role by bridging local industry expertise with EI’s global network of over 20,000 members in 100+ countries, ensuring Nigerian voices and perspectives are well represented on the international stage.
Each year, the community delivers a diverse calendar of professional events, ranging from high-level executive sessions to conferences and networking forums. These platforms provide opportunities for:

The Singapore Community plays an active and thought-provoking role in engaging its growing community of EI members, partner organisations and institutions across the region. It provides a forum for the exchange of international good practice, supports continuous professional development (CPD), and fosters informed debate on the evolving energy landscape and the energy transition.
A core priority of Singapore Community is the development of a vibrant and inclusive Young Professionals Network (YPN), creating opportunities for emerging leaders to build skills, expand professional networks and engage directly with senior industry practitioners across disciplines.
The Community works closely with leading local institutions such as the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), alongside other professional bodies, business associations and academic institutions. These collaborations enable joint programming, cross-disciplinary dialogue and wider outreach, strengthening links between industry, academia and policy, and reinforcing Singapore’s role as a regional hub for energy expertise, innovation and professional excellence.

Singapore Community visit to Sembcorp’s Tengeh floating solar farm – February 2023
Guoco Tower, Singapore
The Sembcorp Tengeh floating solar farm represents a landmark achievement in Singapore’s renewable energy journey and is the country’s first inland floating solar installation. Spanning approximately 45 hectares of reservoir surface and comprising over 122,000 floating photovoltaic panels, the 60 MWp facility ranks among the largest inland floating solar PV systems in the world at the time of commissioning.
...Designed with high-efficiency PV modules and an optimised floating layout, the project maximises solar yield while minimising land-use pressures—an especially critical consideration in land-scarce Singapore.
Beyond power generation, the project demonstrates innovative systems integration: the electricity generated is sufficient to power all five of Singapore’s domestic water treatment plants, making Singapore one of the few countries globally to operate a 100% green waterworks system. The project exemplifies how engineering innovation, smart siting, and systems thinking can unlock scalable renewable solutions even in highly constrained urban environments.

Singapore’s energy future is deliberately and actively being shaped to balance energy security, economic competitiveness, and decarbonisation, guided by a clear, evolving government strategy. Today, approximately 95% of Singapore’s electricity is generated from natural gas, reflecting the city-state’s lack of indigenous energy resources, limited land availability for large-scale renewables, and the need for highly reliable baseload power to support a globally competitive economy.
...Recognising these structural constraints, Singapore has nonetheless committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 under its Long-Term Low-Emissions Development Strategy.
This commitment is driving a progressive diversification of the energy system through a combination of renewable energy deployment (including solar), regional power imports, energy storage, low-carbon fuels, carbon capture technologies, and digital optimisation of the power system. Rather than pursuing a single-technology solution, Singapore’s approach emphasises pragmatism, resilience, and optionality, positioning the country as a testbed for integrated, system-level solutions that could inform decarbonisation pathways for other resource-constrained economies.

The South Western and South Wales Community represents a region that covers quite a large geographical area which deploys and hosts a large diversity of energy technologies, industries and experts. There are a large number of academic institutions included and represented in the area and we provide connections between all areas of the industry and relevant academic institutions. Though geographically disparate, we aim to create opportunities to connect in person and through online events. We provide a broad mix of learning and sharing events to meet the needs of our local members.
As a Chartered Energy Engineer and EI Member who has benefited from knowledge sharing and the support and guidance of others in shaping my career, I would like to welcome all regional members to engage with the regional group such that it supports and represents their needs and enables them to stay connected with the EI and other local members. This event offered a fantastic opportunity to gain insights into local hydrogen production, distribution, and use, with a talk from Dr Leighton Holyfield on the facility’s purpose and future directions. Attendees also had a tour of Kiwa’s hydrogen site and testing laboratories, providing a unique end-to-end view of their capabilities.
