Aberdeen, Highlands & Islands YPN was the very first Energy Institute YPN to be set up, 15 years ago in Aberdeen to develop the skills and sector knowledge of professionals in the early stages of their career. Through a strategically planned programme of events, the network empowers emerging professionals to learn, network, and grow. It offers early-stage professionals and emerging talent the chance to engage with industry leaders and experts, discovering a range of topics across the energy sector in the North East of Scotland and globally. Our dedicated committee members plan and implement around 10 events annually - addressing a diverse range of trending and forward-looking topics that reflect the fast-evolving energy landscape- including technical events, hands‑on learning opportunities and relaxed social meet‑ups that make it easy to build meaningful professional relationships.

Scottish government resets offshore wind ambition to 40 GW

In January 2026, the Scottish government announced a reset of its offshore wind ambition, committing to up to 40 GW of new capacity by 2040. This revised target, confirmed by Gillian Martin MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Climate Action and Energy, represents a substantial increase from the previous goal of 8–11 GW by 2030.

At last week’s oil and gas exhibition SPE Offshore Europe, in Aberdeen, UK offshore energy trade association OEUK blamed the UK government’s tax regime and the Energy Profits Levy (EPL) for accelerating the decline of offshore energy production, by deterring capital investment.

In collaboration with Ascot Lloyd, we hosted The age of uncertainty – navigating volatile times with confidence, an engaging event focused on helping young professionals in North East Scotland build a sustainable financial future.
Held at Wild Goose, Union Terrace Gardens, the evening brought together attendees for insightful discussions on emerging financial risks, long-term resilience, and practical approaches to navigating uncertain economic conditions.
...Alongside expert insights, the event provided an excellent opportunity for networking, allowing participants to connect with peers and professionals while discussing key financial topics in an open and informal setting. With engaging conversations, valuable takeaways, and a welcoming atmosphere complemented by canapés and refreshments, the event proved both informative and impactful.

London and Home Counties YPN

The Energy Institute's London and Home Counties YPN is a community of energy enthusiasts dedicated to creating spaces for dialogue, connection and learning. The network is run by a committee of 14 volunteers, supported by a group of ambassadors.
We organise not-for-profit seminars, panel discussions and workshops across a variety of topics related to the energy industry. Our events are aimed at bringing together young energy professionals who are passionate about driving positive change in the sector. We host one panel event per month, and have many additional socials, site visits and sponsor companies' events across the year.
Our core values can be summarised in three pillars:
- Ensuring accessibility – We ensure that our events remain affordable to young energy professionals. While most professional conferences can be incredibly expensive, we aim to make our event more affordable than a pub pint in central London (often while offering food and drinks!)
- Developing curiosity – We ensure that our event calendar spans across a multitude of topics, and design each event so that it can be enjoyed by both professionals working in the field and curious minds without previous knowledge.
- Fostering critical thinking – We are committed to creating spaces where a variety of voices and opinions across the industry are welcome. We believe that debates and discussions are fundamental to shaping a better, open, energy future.

COP 30: What is on the table? – November 2025
KPMG Canary Wharf, Canada Square, London
This COP 30 panel discussion event, hosted in collaboration with KPMG Leaders 2050, brought together experts, industry professionals, and sustainability advocates to explore the climate action agenda shaping the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference in Brazil.
...The panel examined key themes and challenges, including accelerated climate adaptation, just transitions, innovative finance, and nature-based solutions, offering valuable insights and diverse perspectives.
Following the discussion, participants took part in an interactive model COP 30 simulation, engaging with the complexities of international climate negotiations and gaining firsthand experience of the trade-offs and strategic decision-making involved.
The event provided both practical insights and an immersive experience, encouraging informed dialogue and strengthening collective engagement in climate action.

The event brought together early-career professionals and EI Fellows in break-out and conversational forums to discuss their journeys, aspirations, concerns, and the Generation 2050 report and reflect on what it means to build the energy system of the future, together.

Debate: Why are UK electricity prices so high and what should be done about it? – October 2025

The debate brought together a panel of industry experts to examine the drivers behind rising UK electricity prices and the implications for households, businesses, and climate policy.
...The discussion explored the sharp increase in energy costs, with average household bills rising to approximately £1,849 per year, alongside the UK’s position as one of the most expensive electricity markets globally—particularly for industrial users. Panellists considered the wider impacts on competitiveness, fuel poverty, and growing household energy debt, as well as differing political perspectives on the causes of the crisis.
Drawing on insights from the Energy Institute’s 2025 Statistical Review of World Energy, the conversation also addressed the challenge of meeting the UK’s legally binding climate commitments amid rising global energy demand and emissions. Key themes included the role of fossil fuel dependence, the transition to net zero, and potential pathways to deliver a more affordable and secure energy system.
The event featured contributions from Arthur Downing (Strategy Director at Octopus Energy), Juliet Davenport OBE (Clean Power 2030 Advisory Board and former CEO of Good Energy), and Kathryn Porter (Independent Energy Consultant and columnist for The Telegraph), who offered a diverse range of perspectives.
The session concluded with a networking reception, providing attendees with the opportunity to continue discussions and connect with peers across the energy sector.

...The event featured contributions from a range of speakers, including Sarah Shields from Mutual Energy, who shared her career journey and highlighted the work and opportunities provided by the Energy Institute. Ellen McCarlie discussed her professional experience and the impactful work carried out by Action Renewables, while Peter McElhinney spoke about founding his own company shortly after graduating from Ulster University.
The session concluded with Áine Murray (Chair of the committee) outlining the different Energy Institute membership pathways and encouraging students to become involved with the professional community early in their careers.
Supported by a pizza reception kindly sponsored by Action Renewables and the Energy Institute, the event created an engaging and welcoming environment for students to connect with industry professionals and explore future career pathways.

Officially established in 2019 and headquartered in Lagos, the Nigeria YPN supports the development and engagement of early-career professionals across Nigeria’s energy sector by providing structured opportunities for:

Edinburgh College achieves full decarbonisation of Midlothian Campus

Edinburgh College is the first in Scotland to fully decarbonise a campus, swapping fossil fuel heating at its Midlothian Campus near Dalkeith for a renewable system through a major energy upgrade. In related news, a new-build neighbourhood in Wales plans to be net zero and additional energy efficiency testing methods for retrofits are recommended.

Fervo Energy’s record-breaking Sugarloaf well in Utah showcases the rapid progress of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), while a new report finds the US Great Basin alone could supply 10% of the country’s electricity. Globally, the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects geothermal could meet 15% of future power demand if costs fall. Following the launch and building on the growing momentum of the network, the second event took place in the Spring of 2025 at Arup’s Birmingham office, delivered in partnership with AFBE - UK.
...As the team continued to expand, the session brought together local inspirational engineers, students, and professionals in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Attendees exchanged experiences, discussed career journeys, and formed meaningful connections, helping to strengthen collaboration across the engineering and energy communities.
EI West Midlands YPN Launch – November 2024

The EI West Midlands Young Professionals Network (YPN) marked its launch November 2024 with a dynamic inaugural event aimed at connecting and empowering emerging talent across the region’s energy sector.
...Hosted by Arup in the heart of Birmingham, the event brought together students, early-career professionals and industry newcomers for direct conversations with emerging sector leaders, EI Company Membership Manager and representatives from EI London and Home Counties YPN. The launch created a space for meaningful exchange, allowing attendees to share practical career insights and begin building a community that reflects the future of energy in the West Midlands.
