This module introduces the core principles of Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS), laying the technical foundation for understanding how these systems operate, their key components, and their emerging role in global energy systems.
Whether you’re new to the topic or brushing up on the basics, this module will give you a strong foundation to build on throughout the course.
This foundational module explores the basic structure and function of battery energy storage, outlining the drivers behind its adoption and its applications both behind-the-meter (BtM) and front-of-the-meter (FtM). Learners will also be introduced to the primary components of a BESS, including batteries, inverters, transformers, switchgear, and control systems, and understand how these parts interact to deliver reliable performance. The module then addresses the advantages and limitations of BESS compared to other storage solutions, alongside a review of market evolution since 2015 - both in the UK and globally.

"The difficult economic situation that we are going through must push loss-adjusting firms, based in Morocco, to open up more internationally. "Before the course, I had a little professional experience in domestic zero-carbon energy technology but I was inexperienced in any other theory and practical topic, audits etc. This provided me with the building blocks to understand this, including the calculations, quickly.
