This module explores the critical health, safety, and environmental (HSE) considerations involved in the deployment and operation of Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS), with a focus on international standards, risk mitigation, and site protection. In this module, we explore the health, safety, and environmental considerations associated with BESS across its lifecycle. You’ll learn about the key risks—such as fire, thermal runaway, and end-of-life management—as well as the standards and best practices used to mitigate them. We’ll also look at the broader environmental impact of battery production and disposal, and how sustainability is being addressed in the industry.
By the end of this module, you’ll be equipped with a well-rounded understanding of what it takes to operate BESS systems safely and sustainably.
This module introduces the key regulatory frameworks and safety standards applicable to battery storage systems, including ISO 45001, NFPA 855, IEC standards, and cyber security protocols such as IEC 62443. Learners will explore essential safety topics such as safe handling during transport, electrical safety and best practices in fire detection, suppression, and emergency response. The module also addresses site security, with an emphasis on intrusion prevention, liability, and compliance requirements across different jurisdictions.
By the end of the module, learners will understand the core health, safety, and environmental risks associated with BESS, and how to manage them in line with international best practices.
