Event Details:

Malaysia, traditionally reliant on fossil fuels and hydropower, is now exploring its under utilised geothermal potential to support a more diversified and sustainable energy mix. While the country lacks high-enthalpy geothermal systems, recent studies have revealed promising low-to-medium enthalpy resources, particularly in regions such as Sabah, Perak, Selangor and Kelantan. This talk will provide an overview of Malaysia’s geothermal landscape, including geological settings, surface manifestations, and subsurface heat flow assessments. The presentation will also highlight the outcomes of recent interdisciplinary research, focusing on direct-use applications for agriculture, tourism, and district heating - key sectors in tropical climates. Furthermore, the role of policy frameworks, academic collaborations, and community engagement will be discussed as drivers for geothermal development. By sharing Malaysia’s evolving approach to geothermal exploration and utilisation, this talk aims to foster regional dialogue and opportunities for research partnerships with others.
