Membership fees:

The annual membership subscriptions for 2026 are given below. If you also hold a professional registration through the EI, additional fees are payable to the Engineering Council and the Society for the Environment. See registration fees.

Registration fees:

These are payable annually if you hold a professional registration through the EI. Fees are collected by the EI but (with the exception of Chartered Energy Manager) set by licensing bodies. We pass them on to the Engineering Council and the Society for the Environment on your behalf.

There is an additional £10 + VAT annual Professional Registration Administration charge payable to the EI if you hold registrations or approvals we award under license (applies to CEnv, CEng, IEng and EngTech). This is a single fee, regardless of the number of titles you hold.

Application fees:

There is no application fee to join us on one of our pre professional grades (Student, Associate Member and Affiliate). Application fees for professional membership and professional registration are charged on a per title basis.

There are also initial registration fees if you are applying for professional registration; we will ask you to pay for this once we have let you know the results of your application. With the exception of Chartered Energy Manager, these fees are set by the relevant licensing body, but collected and passed on by the EI on your behalf.

There is no VAT on individual membership fees.

EI membership runs from 1 January - 31 December each year. The due date is 1 January of the year for which you are reviewing, unless you pay by Direct debit, in which case your payment will be taken in February.

We offer half rate concessions on annual membership subscriptions for those who are in receipt of an income of less than £15,000 per year before tax, and local rates for pre professional members in Malaysia, Singapore and Nigeria. To request a concession for a particular subscription year, you will need to send us a formal declaration confirming that you meet the eligibility criteria before 1 January.

We also offer concessionary rates for those who are fully retired from energy. There is no need to reconfirm this every year - a one off declaration in the year you retire is sufficient.

Signing up for Direct Debit is the easiest way to ensure your membership fee is paid in time each year and your access to your member benefits is uninterrupted. To register, please complete and submit our direct debit form.

Alternatively, you can renew your membership by logging into your MyEI profile, clicking on ‘Renew membership’ and entering your card details. When you have paid, you will be able to download a receipt. Please also make sure to review your contact details and mailing preferences to ensure all your details are up-to-date.

If you are a UK taxpayer, then please Gift Aid your subscription by downloading this declaration form and sending it to us. You will be enabling the EI as a registered charity to make the most of your payment by claiming an additional tax back from HMRC. To find out more please read the FAQs.

You are welcome to apply for a higher grade of membership or add an additional professional registration at any time throughout the year. Applications from existing members and new members are treated the same, except for the special instances listed on each grade’s web page. The self-assessment form is required for applicants who do not hold recognised accredited engineering qualifications or equivalent recognition under international accords. It helps demonstrate how your education and experience meet the Engineering Council’s standards.

The Engineering Council defines and sets the educational standards for Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech) registration, as outlined in UK Standard for Professional Energy Competence (UK-SPEC).

You have up to six months from the date of request to submit your completed form and supporting documents. After that, your application will be withdrawn and you will need to reapply.

Your submission is reviewed by the Individual Case Procedure (ICP) Panel, composed of qualified engineers experienced in assessing education and experiential learning.

You can use:

• Transcripts from your studies mapped to required learning outcomes.
• Evidence from your professional experience and on-the-job learning.
• A combination of both.

A UK ENIC (The UK National Information Centre) report can supplement your application but cannot replace the self-assessment form and supporting documentation.

Yes. Unless your qualifications are formally accredited by the Engineering Council or covered by an international accord, you must complete the self-assessment.

You can still demonstrate the required learning outcomes through your professional experience. In some cases, you may also need to complete a technical report.

Normally, no interview is required. However, one may be requested in borderline cases to clarify evidence. A technical or professional interview will be required later for full CEng/IEng registration.

Yes. Your completed form must be signed by a professional sponsor or line manager who can verify that the work is your own. Ideally, your sponsor should be registered at the same or a higher professional grade.

Yes. You can apply for Interim registration before, during, or at the same time or after your professional membership application.

Chartered status recognises that you have the knowledge, skills and integrity to practise as a professional engineer. It is a globally respected qualification demonstrating that you meet the highest professional and ethical standards in engineering.

Chartered Engineers through the EI are recognised internationally and often preferred by employers for senior or high responsibility roles. It demonstrates your technical competence, leadership and commitment to professional development within the energy sector.

The standards for both titles are the same and the difference lies in the context of your work.

• Choose Chartered Energy Engineer if your work focuses on general or renewable energy disciplines.
• Choose Chartered Petroleum Engineer if your work primarily involves petroleum exploration, production or processing.

Yes. If your qualifications are not accredited or recognised, you can apply for Interim Registration first. This allows the EI to assess your qualifications and experience individually through the Individual Case Procedure (ICP) Panel. You will receive guidance on any gaps to address before progressing to full CEng registration.

If you studied outside the UK, check the European Federation of National Engineering Associations' (FEANI) European Engineering Education Database or the Washington Accord listings for recognition.

Yes. You must hold professional membership of the EI as a Member (MEI) or Fellow (FEI) before applying for Chartered Engineer status, You can submit your application for MEI or FEI at the same time.

You can download the application pack from the EI website or complete the online application form via your EI portal. The application has two main parts:

• Part A: Your personal details, qualifications, work experience, organisational chart and CPD record.
• Part B:  Competence grid is where you describe how your experience meets the Engineering Council’s standards.

You will also need to submit supporting documents and sign a declaration to confirm your information is accurate and complies with the EI’s Code of Conduct.

Your application submission will be acknowledged within 10 working days. It will then be reviewed by qualified assessors who may:
Invite you to attend a Professional Review Interview (PRI).

• Request further information.
• Recommend additional experience or learning if standards are not yet met.

Applicants are notified of the outcome within 10 working days of the Professional registration Panel’s meeting.

The Professional Review Interview (usually held online via Microsoft Teams) lasts around 45-75 minutes. The interview explores your technical experience, competence and understanding of your professional responsibilities and ethical standards.

There is no set number of years of experience required. You should apply when you can fully demonstrate the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) competences and understand your professional and ethical responsibilities. Discussing your readiness with a mentor or the EI team can help.

As a Chartered Engineer, you will need to keep your skills up to date through CPD recording, reflecting on and evaluating your learning and career growth throughout your professional life, as set by the Engineering Council.

A Chartered Environmentalist is a professional who has demonstrated the knowledge, experience and commitment to work sustainably and ethically to protect and enhance the environment. Through the Energy Institute (EI), CEnv professionals work across the energy sector to address environmental challenges, promote sustainability and influence positive change.

The Energy Institute (EI) awards the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) title under license from the Society for the Environment (SocEnv).

Chartered status:

• Confirms your professional competence. It signals that you meet high standards of competence, ethics and professional integrity in environmental practice.
• Demonstrates to clients and stakeholders that you are qualified to deliver sustainable, evidence-based solutions and recognition internationally by employers and industry bodies.
• Demonstrates your commitment to sustainability and continuing professional development (CPD).
• Career advancement strengthens your CV, credibility in tenders, and promotion prospects, especially in consultancy, infrastructure or public sector roles.

You will need to show that you have:

• A master’s level understanding of environmental and sustainability issues (through study or equivalent experience).
• Sufficient professional experience and development in your role.

If you do not have a master’s degree, you are not alone. Hundreds of CEnv registrants do not have a qualification at this level. They were able to demonstrate their level of knowledge through their CEnv application using examples of their work.

Yes. You must be a professional member of the EI as a Member (MEI) or Fellow (FEI) before applying for Chartered Environmentalist status.

Chartered Energy Managers are professionals responsible for managing energy within an organisation and ensuring its efficient use. They provide advice on the development and implementation of energy-efficient policies. Beyond being energy experts with wide-ranging knowledge of complex issues, they must also be excellent communicators and change managers, capable of influencing organisational policy and helping others understand the potential of energy efficient practice.

The Chartered Energy Manager title is unique to the Energy Institute.

Chartered status formally recognises professional standing. It confirms that an individual possesses the skills, knowledge, understanding, and integrity necessary to practice as a professional in the UK. This status is highly recognised and valued in many parts of the world.

Many employers in the energy sector look for professional qualifications or a commitment to achieving them as an indication of quality and professionalism during recruitment, often restricting the management of larger projects to those within the organisation who are formally qualified.

Yes. Becoming a Chartered Energy Manager requires you to hold professional membership as either a Member (MEI) or Fellow (FEI). If you are not already a professional member of the EI, you must apply for MEI or FEI in advance or at the same time of making your application for Chartered Energy Manager.

Applications can be submitted at any time, but the EI Professional Registration Panel meets four times a year.

There is no set amount of experience required before you can apply, everyone's career path varies. The most crucial factor is that you can show you meet the required standards for the registration. If you have a good range of evidence demonstrating that you can fully meet the competences and understand your obligations as a professional, you should be ready to apply. It often takes most people a few years to develop the necessary applied knowledge and practical experience.

Applications are acknowledged within 10 working days of receipt. The Professional Membership Team verifies the application's completeness before sending it to assessors. Assessors then evaluate the evidence against the required standards and recommend a course of action. This may involve:

* Being asked to attend a Professional Review Interview.

* Being asked to provide further information.

* Being informed that, based on the submitted evidence, you have not demonstrated meeting the standards (in which case, feedback will indicate areas for further learning and experience).

Applicants are informed of the Professional Registration Panel's final decision within 10 working days of its meeting.

The Professional Review Interview is usually held online (via Microsoft Teams) and lasts 45–75 minutes.

You will be asked to discuss:

• Your experience and how it meets the Chartered Energy Manager competences.
• Your professional responsibilities.
• Your understanding of ethics and sustainability in the energy sector.

You should review your application and prepare examples of your work and decision-making in environmental contexts.

Members must adhere to the EI Code of Professional Conduct, which outlines standards regarding health, safety, security and the environment. Key principles include taking reasonable steps to maintain and develop professional competence, discharging professional responsibilities with integrity, treating people fairly and without bias, rejecting bribery and all forms of corrupt behaviour, and upholding the good name of the profession. Members must also conduct and record continuing professional development (CPD) necessary to maintain and enhance competence.

No. ESOS Lead Assessor registration is now separate. You can apply via the Energy Efficiency Experts register once you hold a relevant chartered title.

Becoming an Incorporated Engineer through the EI is a qualification that recognises you have the skills, knowledge, understanding and integrity to practice as an engineer in the energy sector. This title gives formal recognition of your professional standing and is highly valued globally. IEng demonstrates the competence, expertise and work ethic that many employers look for when recruiting staff.

Incorporated Engineers working in energy are typically involved in managing and maintaining applications, working with current and developing technologies. They may be involved in any part of the energy sector, from oil and gas to renewables, and from engineering design to operations. They possess both general and specialised engineering knowledge, can apply existing and new technologies, and have the know-how to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods in the workplace.

To successfully apply for IEng registration, you must demonstrate both:

• The appropriate foundation theoretical knowledge in engineering.
• Competence and commitment that you have gained sufficient experience and professional development in the workplace to practice to a competent, nationally recognised standard. This also includes a commitment to society, your profession and the environment, and the requirement to exercise responsibilities in an ethical manner.

The standards for IEng registration are set by the Engineering Council.

• The foundation theoretical knowledge is described in the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP) document.
• The standards of competence and commitment are detailed in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

Your foundation technical knowledge may be demonstrated via:

• Automatically recognised or accredited qualifications. If you studied in the UK, you can check if your qualifications are accredited by visiting the Engineering Council’s website. Automatically recognised qualifications typically include an accredited Bachelor’s or Honours degree in engineering or technology; or a Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree plus appropriate further learning; or an NVQ4 or SVQ4 plus appropriate further learning to degree level.
• International recognition may apply if you studied in the EU and hold a first cycle (Bachelor’s level) qualification on the European Federation of National Engineering Associations' (FEANI) database, or if you hold a qualification approved by a country signed up to the Sydney Accord.

If you do not have automatically recognised qualifications, you can still apply through the Individual Case Procedure (ICP). Energy is a diverse sector, and it is not unusual for professionals to have varied qualifications and backgrounds.

You will first need to apply for Interim registration. This allows the Energy Institute to review all your qualifications, experience and training. The ICP Panel will review the detailed information you submit and either confirm you meet the standard or provide guidance on any gaps you need to address.

You must show that you have undertaken sufficient practical experience and professional development in the workplace to competently apply your knowledge, skills and understanding. This is assessed against the specific standards detailed in the UK-SPEC document.

Incorporated Engineers are assessed on five main areas of competence and commitment (A–E) derived from UK-SPEC:

• A: Knowledge and understanding: Using a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge to apply existing and emerging technology.
• B: Design, development and solving engineering problems: Applying theoretical and practical methods to processes, systems and services.
• C: Responsibility, management and leadership: Providing technical and commercial management, and planning work and resources effectively.
• D: Communication and interpersonal skills: Demonstrating effective communication at all levels and awareness of diversity issues.
• E: Personal and professional commitment: Demonstrating commitment to professional standards, obligations to society, the profession, and the environment.

Yes. Becoming an Incorporated Engineer through the Energy Institute requires holding professional membership as either a Member (MEI) or Fellow (FEI). If you are not already a professional member, you must apply for MEI or FEI in advance of making your application for registration.

The PDR is a crucial element of Part A of your application and serves as your introduction to the assessors. It provides an overview of your academic background, career progression and professional experience, demonstrating your continuous development within the energy sector. The PDR must be written in the first person (‘I’) and should specifically articulate the tasks and activities you undertook and detail your personal accomplishments and impact. It should not exceed 1,000 words (body text only).

To apply for or maintain registration, you must supply a record of:

• How you have maintained and developed your professional competence in the last three years.
• A future plan detailing how you intend to continue maintaining and developing your competence.

You typically need two sponsors to support your application. Your sponsors must be in a position to confirm the accuracy of your information (qualifications, training and experience). They must:

• Be a professional member of a UK or international professional body (not necessarily the EI).
• Hold a title or professional membership at least equal to the level at which you are applying.
• Ideally, if applying for IEng, one sponsor should also be a registrant (IEng, CEng or EngTech).

One of your sponsors should ideally be your immediate line manager or director. Sponsors must review your application in full, sign the form.

The EI acknowledges the application within 10 working days.  The Professional Membership Team verifies the application's completeness.  Assessors evaluate the evidence against required standards and recommend a course of action.  Subject to assessor feedback, applicants may be interviewed.  The recommendations are presented at the Professional re for approval.  Applicants are informed of the decision within 10 working days of the meeting.

Assessors can recommend that:

• You attend a professional interview.
• You provide further information before the application can proceed.
• You have not demonstrated that you meet the standards. In this case, feedback will indicate the areas where more learning and experience are recommended before reapplying.

Becoming an EngTech through the EI formally recognises your professional expertise and integrity. It confirms that you have the skills, knowledge and understanding required to practise as Engineering Technicians within the energy sector. The EngTech title demonstrates competence, commitment and professionalism, qualities highly valued by employers across the industry.

EngTech apply proven techniques and procedures to solve practical engineering challenges. Their work may include designing, developing, manufacturing, commissioning, operating or maintaining equipment, processes or services. They often hold supervisory or technical responsibilities, possess strong interpersonal and problem solving skills, work safely and sustainably, and are comfortable using modern technology and systems.

To successfully apply for IEng registration, you must demonstrate both:

• The appropriate foundation theoretical knowledge in engineering.
• Competence and commitment that you have gained sufficient experience and professional development in the workplace to practice to a competent, nationally recognised standard. This also includes a commitment to society, your profession, and the environment, and the requirement to exercise responsibilities in an ethical manner.

The approved educational standard includes one of the following:

• An Advanced or Apprenticeship, or another work based learning programme approved by a licensed professional engineering institution.
• A qualification in engineering or construction at:
  • Level 3 or above in the Qualifications and Credit Framework/National Qualifications Framework (England and Northern Ireland).
  • Level 6 or above in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework.
  • Level 3 or above in the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales.

If you studied in the UK, visit the Engineering Council’s course search page to confirm whether your qualification is accredited.

If you studied outside the UK, your qualification may be automatically recognised if it is from a country that has signed the Washington Accord

You can apply for Interim registration with the EI. This confirms that you meet the foundation technical knowledge requirements for EngTech and supports your progression toward full registration.

Yes. You can still apply through the Individual Case Procedure (ICP). The EI will assess your qualifications, experience and training, and may confirm that you meet the standard or provide guidance on areas to develop before reapplying.

You typically need two sponsors to support your application. Your sponsors must be in a position to confirm the accuracy of your information (qualifications, training and experience). They must:

• Be a professional member of a UK or international professional body (not necessarily the EI).
• Hold a title or professional membership at least equal to the level at which you are applying.
• Ideally, if applying for IEng, one sponsor should also be a registrant (IEng, CEng or EngTech).

One of your sponsors should ideally be your immediate line manager or director. Sponsors must review your application in full, sign the form.

You must provide a record of CPD activities over the past three years, along with a future development plan. Your CPD should demonstrate how you maintain and enhance your professional competence. Applicants must adhere to the EI’s CPD Code for Registrants.

Additional documents are optional. If your application is complete, annexes are not necessary. However, you may include brief supporting information such as a job description, role profile or a list of publications if relevant to your competence evidence.

Company membership provides organisations with a platform to showcase their organisational achievements and commitments to the energy sector and society whilst upskilling and developing their employees.

You can apply for Company membership by completing the online application form found on the Institutes website at Membership | Energy Institute.

The subscription fees are divided into five bands and, as each organisation who applies is structured differently, we leave it up to individual companies to decide which subscription band would be suitable.  For example, companies may have an energy sector which comprises of a couple hundred employees but feel that the membership benefits would suit only a few employees.  Therefore, the subscription fee would be based on the lower band.

Membership runs from 1 January to 31 December.

The membership fee will be based on the following year's subscription fee so company members can enjoy 15 months membership for the price of 12.

Membership can be cancelled at any time by emailing [email protected] with a reason why cancellation is taking place.

Renewal invoices are dispatched by email and sent to the main representative and account payable departments during the first week of December.

The payment terms are 30 days from receipt of invoice.
