Energy Institute and Energy Leeds have organised for Jim Cardwell from Northern Powergrid to give a talk on the role of electricity networks in unlocking the low carbon future.

New technology and digitalisation are driving unprecedented change in the way energy is created and used as we move to a low carbon economy. We need to make sure that our network is able to safely and securely support these changes whilst maintaining high standards of reliability for our customers. Customers will play an active role as more and more homes and businesses acquire solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles. This means the role of a local powergrid operator is changing. We want to give customers the opportunity to make money by using these resources to import or export energy and vary consumption at our request, providing flexibility which helps us to operate the network efficiently and defer or avoid network reinforcement to help keep costs down. The talk will explore these issues to understand what needs to happen and when to enable this transformation in our energy system.

Speaker: Jim Cardwell, Head of Policy Development at Northern Powergrid, is leading on the delivery of customer propositions that support the transition to a smarter more flexible energy system. Since joining Northern Powergrid in 2004, his networks experience also encompasses smart grid innovation projects and the regulatory issues and programme management involved in price control reviews that set revenues for the monopoly business. Jim joined the industry in 1991 and previously worked for E.ON in a number of technical and managerial roles in the power generation business before moving into electricity distribution.
