This unique project brings to life the challenge of energy transition converting a gas network from one type of fuel gas to another and the planning that enabled this to happen.
The project researched and distilled the findings of hundreds of reports, journal articles, films and press articles as well as consulting with those engineers who worked on conversion to understand the real-life experiences of those involved. The project was funded through the Network Innovation Allowance by Wales and West Utilities and Northern Gas Networks.
- How the gas industry evolved after nationalisation post WWII
- The reasoning for the decision to switch to Natural Gas
- How the programme was planned and implemented
- The impact on the energy sector
Lessons Learnt: Navigating the planning system in an Energy Transition:
- GLVIA3 what is the purpose of landscape and visual assessment (issues and opportunities) – the mismatch between landscape assessment and policy context.
- The role of a landscape architect at the planning stage.
- Landscape value, susceptibility and quality – particularly in relation to Green Belt/Grey Belt and scenic quality/beauty.
- Local landscape designations for value and landscape hierarchy?
- GLVIA3 what is the purpose of landscape and visual assessment (issues and opportunities) – the mismatch between landscape assessment and policy context. Views vs landscapes.
Weightmans will also contribute from a legal perspective.
Speakers:
- Prof. Russell Thomas - Technical Director, WSP
He has spent most of his career researching different environmental aspects of the gas industry, from its environmental legacy to a potential future transition. In recent years his focus has turned to preserving the history and the heritage of the gas industry. He is chair of the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) History Panel and co-editor of its publication, The Historic Gas Times.
- Paul Beswick - Head of Landscape, Enzygo Environmental Consultants
Paul has been involved with the design and implementation of a variety of projects whilst working as a Landscape Architect throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and the Americas. With over 35-years’ experience, Paul has a background of working with engineering, architectural and planning professionals and has experience of both public and private practice with a wide range of projects including environmental coordination, master planning, landscape and visual impact assessment and landscape and urban design for infrastructure, residential, commercial, leisure, waste, renewables and land-use projects.
Paul has a sound working knowledge and understanding of all relevant environmental and planning legislation, and guidance including EIA, SEA, GLVIA, DMRB, NATA, GOMMMS and WebTAG and has provided expert witness advice on a wide range of landscape, visual and community issues (including access and severance).
In addition to his landscape role Paul has increasingly developed his environmental co-ordination abilities and has acted as Environmental Co-ordinator on a number of large-scale infrastructure, leisure and residential projects.
Paul also has excellent experience in survey, appraisal and evaluation techniques, including liaison with stakeholders directly affected by options. He has a sound understanding of the commercial aspects relating to materials replacement, and co-ordination mitigation measures for dealing with protected species and archaeological resources.
