This module examines the regulatory frameworks, policy drivers, and market mechanisms shaping the economic viability of Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) in the UK, EU, and globally. We’ll also explore the economic and regulatory context that supports (or hinders) BESS deployment. We’ll cover how BESS participates in electricity markets, how value is created through different revenue streams, and what policies and incentives are driving investment. You’ll also gain insights into the challenges around regulation and how they impact the growth of the sector.

This module explores the legislative frameworks and policies that influence the development and operation of BESS projects. Learners will examine key regulations such as G99 standards and generation licensing requirements, as well as relevant UK and EU directives on energy storage and battery use. The module also investigates how policy initiatives - such as renewable energy targets, energy storage mandates, the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and the European Green Deal - are driving BESS adoption.

The module provides an introduction to market mechanisms that support revenue generation for BESS, including ancillary services, capacity markets, energy trading opportunities, and revenue stacking strategies. This equips learners with the knowledge to evaluate the financial landscape for BESS projects in a dynamic and policy-sensitive environment.
