The Clean Growth Strategy

The UK’s track record in reducing greenhouse gas emissions without compromising economic growth has been one of the most successful in the world. Since 1990, we have reduced emissions by 42% whilst the economy has grown by two-thirds. Additionally, the UK now has the largest installed offshore wind capacity in the world and exports one in every five electrical vehicles driven in Europe.

Technological innovations and investments in lower carbon technologies has meant that renewable power sources such as wind and solar are more affordable, even in comparison to coal and gas, therefore not only have these innovations led to new high-value jobs and industries being created, they will also help with setting the sixth carbon budget in 2021.

Despite the high level of progress made, the UK needs to continue to cut emissions in order to meet its carbon budgets and the overall 2050 emissions target required by the Climate Change Act 2008. Such progress in reducing GHG emissions is particularly needed in the transport, heat and industrial sectors. Three quarters of professionals surveyed for the Energy Institute’s Energy Barometer warn that meeting our carbon targets will prove challenging.

To further move the UK in the direction of sustainable development, the Government unveiled the new Clean Growth Strategy in October 2017. The strategy covers the broad spectrum of the energy system and describes ambitions in many areas that should move the UK energy system forwards. Its key proposals and policies address green finance, emission reductions in specific sectors of the economy and government leadership.

The Energy Institute (EI) believes that the strategy breathes new life into decarbonising the UK. However, like with any strategy, the devil is in the detail in terms of how the clean growth policies are implemented and how they deliver what people and businesses are striving for.
