Overview:
The Energy Institute (EI) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have been working on the health and safety concerns relating to the deployment of large-scale carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) for several years. Despite sharing CCUS as a focus topic, research efforts between the two organisations have progressed largely independently.
Recognising the potential benefits of closer collaboration, a joint workshop was conceived as a strategic step towards aligning research interests. CCUS was chosen as the first of the Net Zero topics for a joint workshop.
The EI and HSE jointly invited representatives of organisations from across the CCUS value chain, including operators, project developers, service providers, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors, insurers, trade bodies, academic institutions and government agencies to take part in an in-person workshop at the EI offices in London on 1 July 2025.
These technical workshop proceedings provide:
- an overview of the workshop aims and participation;
- a summary of the presentations;
- key discussion items from the breakout sessions;
- key items discussed during the final plenary, and
- conclusions, recommendations and next steps.
