Overview:

One of SafetyOn’s main work areas is the Safe by Design (SbD) programme, which brings experts together to collaborate on specific identified issues in a focused effort to reduce risk within the onshore wind industry through better design.

The objectives of the SbD ice fall/ice throw workshop included the following:

  • To examine control measures in place used to prevent the risk of injury from ice fall/ice throw from wind turbine generators (WTG).
  • To identify potential hazards and opportunities to design out hazards and minimise risks.
  • To produce the report of recommendations for design and process changes for the industry to consider in future developments.

The approach taken to deliver the workshop and this report included:

  • An incident data review.
  • A literature review.
  • A pre-workshop hazard identification (HAZID) study.
  • Facilitation of the SbD workshop.
  • Reporting of SbD workshop findings.
