Overview:
This report explores the operational, economic and environmental implications of integrating carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies into thermal power generation. Focusing on commercially mature amine-based post-combustion carbon capture systems, it examines applications across combined cycle gas turbines (CCGTs), energy-from-waste (EfW), biomass and coal-fired power plants.
The report assesses the efficiency impacts and energy requirements associated with CCS deployment, highlighting that CO₂ capture rates of 95% or greater are now technically achievable. It also reviews the current global status of power sector CCS projects, including large-scale developments underway in the UK, and identifies key knowledge gaps relating to long-term reliability, maintainability and flexible operation as the technology moves towards wider commercial deployment.
