Firewater deluge systems associated with plant producing and processing potentially hazardous hydrocarbons are identified as “Safety Critical Elements”.  Because the potential consequences of failure of firewater deluge systems when required in an emergency may be extremely serious, the nature of the environmental degradation threats to which they may be subject should be understood and managed.

This guidance document helps to identify what the degradation mechanisms are, their monitoring and management, and is put in the context of the Regulatory environment associated with health and safety and mitigation of risk to human life.
