Overview:

The Energy Institute greenhouse gas emissions calculator for remediation options appraisal (GGEC) is a Microsoft Excel-based tool that enables practitioners to estimate Scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) for remediation strategies defined in the Environment Agency’s Land Contamination Risk Management (LCRM) Remediation Options Matrix.

Developed for use at LCRM Stage 2 – Options Appraisal, the GGEC allows users to compare up to three alternative remediation strategies, each comprising multiple technologies and associated vehicles, plant and equipment (VPE). The tool is pre-populated with typical VPE and emission factors but also allows users to add their own equipment and define bespoke strategies.

This user manual provides comprehensive guidance on using the GGEC, including spreadsheet navigation, input parameters, results interpretation and troubleshooting. It also explains boundaries and assumptions, such as the focus on fossil-fuel-related Scope 1 emissions, treatment of electric power and the exclusion of non-fuel sources and lifecycle considerations.

The GGEC supports consistent, transparent estimation of GHG emissions to inform remediation option selection, helping users incorporate carbon considerations into contaminated land management decisions.

The GGEC comprises a Microsoft Excel calculation tool and an accompanying user manual, both available to download with a free Energy Institute account.
