Overview:
The petroleum industry is using a broadening range of product mixtures (blends) and new liquid products (e.g. BTL/HVO). To calculate the volumetric shrinkage that can occur when blending hydrocarbon liquids, the industry currently relies on API MPMS 12.3: Calculation
of petroleum quantities: calculation of volumetric shrinkage resulting from blending light hydrocarbons with crude oil.
This report presents the results of the work commissioned by the EI to H&D Fitzgerald to examine mixing and shrinkage for a number of hydrocarbon blends in common use with the aim of gaining an understanding of possible errors which might result from using the API
algorithm outside its stated scope.
