Overview:

This fifth edition of EI 1584 provides recommended minimum performance and mechanical specifications for the design and first article qualification testing of aviation fuel hydrant system pit valves and hydrant pit couplers.

Specifications are also provided in order to achieve universal interchangeability between components of various manufacturers, as well as those for optional features that component manufacturers may be requested by users to provide.

The performance requirements and optional recommendations included in this publication are for equipment intended for systems in aviation turbine fuel service. They do not apply to aviation gasoline.

The main revisions incorporated in this fifth edition of EI 1584 are:

  • Aligning impact and steady load testing requirements with those included in EI 1576 Hydrant pit coupler lift assist device testing protocol.
  • Removal of the requirement for separate air supply for the deadman in the pit valve and hydrant pit coupler elbow pilots.
  • Expanding information comparing advantages/disadvantages of different pilot operation.
  • Inclusion of the option of redundant ports/bosses to accommodate future devices for system monitoring (to support performance-based inspection).
  • Include consistent references to fuel-pressure- (as well as air-pressure-) operated pit valve.

The qualification testing requirements that were included in the third and fourth editions of this publication have not been significantly amended in this fifth edition. Therefore, existing qualifications to the third and fourth editions are recognised as also meeting the requirements of this fifth edition.
