Overview:

Responding to the continuous advancement of technology, the Energy Institute, Ipieca, IOGP, and OGCI have updated their guidance and online tool to support operators in selecting and deploying methane detection and quantification technologies.

Eliminating methane emissions from the upstream oil and gas industry is one of the most impactful short-term opportunities for climate change mitigation and advancing the goals of the Paris Agreement. To help operators in this effort, the report outlines key criteria for technology selection, offers guidance on deployment, and includes real-world examples of different technology combinations in use.

Alongside the report, an online technology filtering tool has been developed, featuring detailed data sheets on over 50 technologies and decision trees to guide deployment. This enables operators to identify the most suitable solutions for their specific needs. Recognising that a one-size-fits-all approach does not exist, the report provides a structured framework and guidelines for selecting and deploying technologies tailored to individual facilities and objectives.

Additionally, EI’s website hosts a complimentary report focused on technologies for quantifying emissions from flares, a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions in the oil and gas sector. This report, along with an additional accompanying technology filtering tool, helps operators pinpoint relevant flare emission quantification technologies.
